It comes in the modern colors of navy and kelly green, or the ancient colors (washed out/faded version of the modern) for dress purposes. Elsie Scott Stuehmeyer is a kilt maker from Scotland who has been making authentic kilts since 1949, and she just happens to live in Petaluma, CA -- just 2 hours drive from where we live. She made John's kilt by hand from the "modern" version of the clan tartan which is pictured above.
