After deciding that we wanted to spend a week in Scotland and another week in Ireland, we did a lot of searching for competing airfare packages. Here are a few of the tips we would share with anyone planning a similar trip.

  1. If you need to book more than one international flight destination ("multi-city", or "multi-leg"), you usually will have to call the airlines directly. The fares are frequently less expensive than the online bookers such as Expedia or Hotwire.

  2. Book directly with the company that owns the plane that flys over the Atlantic -- if you book through a secondary company changes are costly, and you have no assurance that your flight schedule will be rebooked if it gets cancelled.

  3. For multi-city packages that include other airline's flights, ask if the secondary company is one of your main carrier's affiliates. If not, take down the flight number, date, and time then call the secondary carrier directly to compare fares. For example, United Airways is your cross-Atlantic carrier, but you are scheduled to take an Air Lingus flight on one of your travel days. If you have United book the Air Lingus flight for you, they may charge more than the actual cost, while Air Lingus will charge their standard rates.

  4. Remember the time-zone difference when you pick your departure time. This may mean you have to sleep on the flight to be able to adjust to the local time, which can be difficult, especially if your seat is right by a busy spot on the plane (lavatories, staircase, etc).

  5. Book your flights 6-12 months in advance. Twelve months is the earliest you can purchase tickets from most airlines, and if you book with fewer than 6 months lead time the prices begin to rise. If you book in advance and the prices happen to go down, you can ask for a voucher for the price difference.
